In the Comedy Trenches

Night one : Windsor arts centre. This is a preview night and I have to hold on to my confidence here because I am not totally on top of the material. I have been doing SLAVERY : THE MAKING OF at Radio 4 up 'til today and I've been trying to learn odd bits of stand up in the gaps ,but it's been impossible. I am slowly learning that I am the kind of guy who needs time to absorb things. If I try and rush anything , it's usually crap. So - I've been learning my stand up comic stuff at night - just running it , until it's nice on the tongue , maybe speaking the lines out at least ten to fifteen times each...this ensures that i remember it and don't have to stumble around looking for cues. What I do now that's different is : before , I used to write the jokes and then learn them and then try it out. Nowadays I seem to be loath to learn anything before I am sure it is funny. Bloody comedians. Advice to wannabe comics tendsto say : work out ten minutes at a time, and make sure you start and finish with material you know- sandwich the new stuff in between.. What we tend to do here is write the new show, book a theatre and then go and try it all out - it's a kind of blood sport. Although there were some quiet moments, there also some big laughs and for that we must strip naked and pray to the Goddess of comedy for shade and sweet water and the odd free laugh. I think this show will develop as we go along - the director Hamish McColl is being very encouraging and steering me through all the crap. He's good news. Is in The Right Size and wrote 'Play Wot I wrote', so he's good people and i'm loving working with him. So, I'm going to try and have a good night's sleep and not think too much about that show - and then we'll do cuts at South HIll Park Arts club tomorrow afternoon. Onward Big Len - right there, in the comedy trenches...
