My people, my people, my people

Are you watching my show? How’s it going, do you think? I’ve got 2 episodes to go and I’d love to know if you’re enjoying it, or what? Yes _I know I stand the risk of getting dissed on my own web site, (How embarrassing would that be ‘your show’s shite, and another thing’) but I would genuinely like some kind of response. We’ve worked so hard trying to figure out what the hell the show is, what it should contain and just how funny Gina Yashere needs to be each week without me feeling all insecure and then having to break both her legs, that I feel It is important, that you the people speak.

I went up to Dudley this weekend and opened Henry court, which is part of the local housing trust up there in the West Midlands, instigated by the good people at Nehemiah housing trust. They are a church based organisation that has gotten involved in the housing of the elderly. My mother was a member of this church and helped to raise money for the scheme and so the people in charge very kindly put forward the idea of naming the housing complex after my Mum. I was chuffed to little dumplings. So I went up there to preside over the opening ceremony and it was great, Bev, Kay, Hilton, Babette, Donna , Keeley, Nena, Carol and a whole heap of relatives were there , all to watch me make a fool of myself for Central news and other members of the press . I then had to make a speech: ‘My mom first came to England because, and I’m pretty sure this is true, she was sitting on the beach in St Anne’s bay, staring at the deep azure sea, feeling the sun’s beneficial heat on her skin, sipping on a Fruit punch, wriggling her toes in the white white sand until eventually she looked at my Dad and said ‘There’s got to be more to life than this! I’ve been reading about this place called…Dudley.’

And so on. They seemed to like all that stuff (circa ‘Have you seen this man’) so I did a bit more of that, and then talked seriously about my Mother’s faith

and her belief that even in a wheelchair she could make a contribution to society. I met quite a lot of people who came up to me and said things like ‘Yow, dow remember me do ya?’ ‘And ‘I fust saw yow on New Ferces, Yow wuz only sixteen wor ya?’ It was great –Dudley is

truly one of the funniest and best places in the world. The people are friendly and talk funny, and I am proud to be one of them, sorry, ‘Its Bostin comin frum Dugley ay it?’

Or something like that.

I think despite all the jokes, I’m going to be helping out on the Live 8 thing at Hyde Park , and I’m taking a more MC –like role at Murrayfield a few days after. I think it’s gonna be ok actually –they’ve managed to sort out Snoop Dogg, Ms Dynamite and Yossou Ndour for London and there’s a much more Womad like affair planned for Scotland. (I don’t know why they didn’t contact the Womad posse for London –what would be the harm in featuring World Music on Live 8 day – a day celebrating the possible eradication of 3rd world debt?)

Still, I know they’re trying to sort out this discrepancy even as we speak, and the whole exercise is to get the biggest and best known people to get off their asses and donate their time for free to bring attention to the plight of the poorest countries in the world.

I think its gonna be a momentous week –things are moving.

Keep an eye on the site for big changes –we’re planning on a complete re think on the whole way we’re organised here, and we want to make it simpler for you to navigate your way around.
