Last night I went back to Jimbo's next to the massage parlour and did my second set of the week

Posted Wednesday, July 20, 2005

The first night I had to do all the stuff that I'm doing in the intro for the British Comedy Gala, but it's a bit of a palaver asking people in a try-out audience to imagine they're seeing dancing girls in beefeater costumes and dancing British policemen...so last night I just did material about Bringing up kids and manners and also Music.

And I finished on this new thing, Old jokes, which is (for anyone who knows me) is Bad Jokes 2, the sequel. I was much happier because it meant I could just get straight into the material like all the other comics. I saw some good people last night:

You should check out if you get the chance, new black comics Rod Thompson, very funny loquacious comedian with no hair, and a kind of self-deprecatory attitude... 'I'm married, but shouldn't stop any ladies in the house hittin' on me, cos i don't know how strong I am... its been seven years, you know... I haven't been tested ...anyway, I'm in Canada, I'm not even sure it counts... I think I get a voucher for this or something... ''

And an astounding woman called Sommore, who is a magnificent Diva from New Jersey, who curses like a sailor on shore leave with $300 in his pocket, but also wears haute couture. She talks about dating an African guy ' he did it to me so good, I was down at immigration filling out his forms..' etc. Very funny.

The big revelation for me was seeing Noel Fielding from the Mighty Boosh - I'm a big fan of the Boosh, they do a TV show set in a weird zoo on the BBC and I specially like them because they did a hip hop song that was an homage to 'The Tundra' 'Ice floe nowhere to go' etc.

Noel is a wonderful comic, a cross between a Glam Rock star and a raddled opium eating 19th century poet, his flights of fancy take transform the audience into woodland creatures and the venue

into a forest, or his joy at having a 'really long mike lead' can lead into a rap about an S and M heckler who leaps on stage and gets tangled up in the lead and rolls around in ecstasy, then he'll just become Half man and half Ram with backwards legs and as he describes his appearance ...damned if he doesn't become that freak!

Hilarious watching the audience's faces as he took them on this roller coaster ride of the imagination. I laughed so much coca cola squirted out of my nose and hit the woman in front of me.

I was on near the end and apart from over running (I don't have a watch) a bit, it seemed to go really well.

So I've got the big gala tomorrow, but today, Its a couple of interviews, and then we're free to have more looking around Montreal, maybe go to the movies, buy some comics from Librarie Astro and then come back and rest for tomorrow, we get down...

Speak soon

Len

the line up tomorrow, by the way is:

Lenny Opening

Rhod Gilbert (welsh posse in the house) Noel Fielding (rock and roll fantasist)

The Hollow men (Sketches -they've got a series on comedy central) Alan Carr (hilarious camp comedy) Adam Bloom (v.funny jewish comic) Miss Behave (sword swallower - go figure) Lee Mack (from the sketch show) Danny Bhoy (Scottish dude, v.funny)

I'm not sure if that's the order, but I do think its gonna kick some serious butt.

I'll let you know how we get on...

peace

Len
