'Who's the black private dick who's a sex machine with all the chicks?'
Isaac Hayes passed away the other day and I wanted to write about him for a minute. He was always an impressive looking chap, he dared to be bald when not very many other brothers were rockin' that particular look. I remember the cover for 'Hot Buttered Soul' which was an overhead shot of Isaac looking down, wearing the customary shades- his bald head gently gleaming in the spotlight. Damn, that head was sexy. He wrote great tunes too in partnership with Stax Alumni David Porter, he worked on Sam and Dave's 'Hold on', 'I'm coming' 'You don't know like I know' 'When something is wrong with my baby' and loads more. I also liked his long raps where he would talk over a groove I'm pretty sure this is where Barry White and a zillion other singers got this idea let the band vamp and just chit chat in a deep and sexy voice about whatever pops into your head. Isaac made Bacharach and David's 'Walk on By' last 12 minutes! He spoke for eight minutes before he sang a word. Amazing! Even Ken Dodd would have to tip a tickling stick to that kind of work. Of course everyone knows his oscar winning work on the movie Shaft- the theme tune featuring the saucy lines that opened this blog, was a world wide hit and spent two weeks at number one in the Billboard hot 100 in November 1970.
I think Hayes, along with Barry White and Teddy Pendergrass, was one of the inspirations for my character
Theophilus P.Wildebeeste. Ike wore far more outrageous clothes than Theo 'but he did speak in a deep voice, wear leather pants and sport huge gold chains perfect for sexual seduction whilst shaking your groove thang.
I'm not a big fan of South Park and so didn't really get the fuss over his character Chef I did smile when the song 'Chocolate Salty Balls' was a minor hit, however some people got a nerve, right (Says the man who wanted to call Theophilus P.Wildebeeste's last album 'The Loin King'
Isaac was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and managed to snag a tiny role in Stargate SG-1. He also appeared in the movie Hustle and Flow. But I think, he would have been most proud of the fact that he was father of 12 children (!) 14 Grand children and three great grand children. That's what I'm talkin bout!
And how cool will that be, man when you get to heaven, you'll roll up to the Pearly Gates, ring the buzzer and instead of a that annoying buzz, you'll hear Charles Pitt scratching away on his guitar, Wicka wicka wicka wicka wicka and a Big bald black brother in aviator shades and a white dashikill be standing there going
'Who is the man that would risk his neck for his brother man'
And three black angels'll be singing Jesus!
Isaac : Cut, cut it's Shaft how many times S-H-A-F-T! Damn-we gots to rehearse this again ya all..
