In appreciation of George Carlin.
Hey - I just wanted to pay big respect to George Carlin, who died recently. Although Richard Pryor, Steve Martin and Bill Cosby were my triumvirate of comedy Gods - Carlin was certainly in my top ten of favourite comedians. Carlin was hilariously funny - playing word games continually - 'Why do they call it tennis, you don't see ten guys out there? They should call it 'two-is, or four -is' 'Why do people say 'I gotta take a shit? You don't TAKE shit, you LEAVE it.'
He liked this kind of word play and used it often. One of his most famous routines was '7 dirty words' which triggered a court case about obscenity in the United States in the Supreme Court. He used to say that he liked human beings individually but he didn't rate them much when they got into groups. Hugely critical of government, religion and sects - he skewered American Culture's greatest icons... one of his routines begged for graveyards to be dug up to get the nutrients into the
soil, to grow much needed crops... he also talked about taking back the nations golf courses and utilising the land for something useful. He was a stalwart of the Tonight show, Letterman and Saturday Night Live; he liked the 'news flash form' and performed them with great aplomb. He placed second on Comedy Central's list of the ten greatest comedians. Ahead of Lenny Bruce and behind Richard Pryor. He was up there. Check out Class Clown, which is his classic album, but I'm a big fan of Jammin' in New York.
He was smart and a true influence on comics as diverse as Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Wright and Stephen Colbert.
Listening to some of his more recent material, I felt that his intolerance with humanity was manifesting itself in a more hectoring, preachy style - but I guess when you get to be in your late 60's - you're allowed to vent some of your perhaps more darker feelings.
Bless you George - You were a funny sabbadambeetch.
peace.
